No. 5 Jones hosts East Central tonight
September 18, 2008

ELLISVILLE - On paper, Jones County Junior College appears to have the edge heading into tonight's game against the East Central Community College Warriors.

The Bobcats are 3-0 overall, 1-0 in the South Division and are ranked No. 5 in the latest NJCAA/JCfootball.com poll. The Warriors are 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the division.

But, do not mention any of that to JCJC head coach Eddie Pierce.

"East Central has moved the football against everybody they have played," he said. "They have a lot of speed and we need to be ready. You get in the South Division and that's just the way it is."

The Bobcats and Warriors will hook up at 7 tonight at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field. The game will air on WGDQ-93.1 FM and on the internet at www.jcjc.edu.

The Bobcats are averaging just over 27 points a game and are giving up just 11.6 points a game on defense. East Central scores just over 24 points a game, but has allowed 119 points through three contests - almost 40 points per game.

PRCC at Hinds
POPLARVILLE - Seventh-ranked and unbeaten Pearl River open its 2008 MACJC South Division football schedule tonight when it travels to Hinds CC in Raymond.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m..

The Wildcats improved to 3-0 overall after their convincing 18-0 shutout victory over a talented Northwest Mississippi squad in Poplarville last week, while the host Eagles (2-1 overall, 1-0 in division) enter the game off a 35-21 victory over winless East Central 35-21 in Decatur to open their division schedule.

Seventh-year PRCC head coach Tim Hatten says Hinds is a formidable foe.

"As usual, Hinds is a very athletic football team with plenty of guys that can really move around well," said Hatten. "And that goes for their quarterback (Wesley Mounger). He's a real mobile kind of guy and it's going to be a challenge to contain him and keep him from beating us."

Hinds opened its season with a 23-12 home victory over still-winless Northeast Mississippi, then was smacked by Northwest Mississippi 31-3 in Raymond before rebounding with its division road win over East Central last week.

All Pearl River games are broadcast live on WMXI-FM (98.1) in Hattiesburg, WFFF-FM (96.7) in Columbia. Fans can also follow the action at www.prcc.edu

Re: Borne off to fast start for Bobcats

Running back leads MACJC with 7 TDs

By Shawn Wansley, JCJC Sports Information Director

Last year, it took 10 games for Daniel Borne to score his first touchdown for the Jones County Junior College Bobcats.

That has not been the case in 2008.

“I am just doing my job,” said Borne, who has already amassed a MACJC-leading seven touchdowns in just three games this season. “I just follow the blocks the line opens up for me.”

Borne, a 5-foot-11, 206-pound sophomore from Archbishop Shaw High School in New Orleans, enjoyed a solid season for Jones last year. He rushed for 260 yards and his lone score was a 79-yard jaunt against Itawamba Community College in the MACJC semifinals, as the Bobcats rolled to a 58-31 victory.

Last week in a 21-9 win at Co-Lin, Borne had to shoulder most of the load because fellow running back Maurice Ducksworth injured a knee in the game’s first series and was unable to return. Borne ended up with 89 yards on 22 carries and scored on runs of 1 and 11 yards.

He said he just did what running back coach Chris Robinson asked him to do.

“Coach gives me the call and they put the ball in my hands,” he said. “I just go out and try to do my best.”

Borne, who has rushed for 218 yards on 52 carries (a 4.2 average), said having a year under his belt has been very beneficial for his success so far this season.

“I am more comfortable in the system this year with my teammates,” said Borne, who rushed for 119 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns in a 23-19 win over East Mississippi on Sept. 6. “Being from out of state, I really did not know anybody when I first got here. But, being around them last year and going through spring and summer practice, I think you can tell we are going to be successful because of the way we work.”

The 3-0 Bobcats, ranked No. 5 in the latest NJCAA/JCfootball.com poll, will host the East Central Community College Warriors in South Division play at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field.

Borne said the Bobcats have been trying to build on the success of last year’s 9-2 team that finished second in the state and was ranked No. 5 in the final poll. Despite losing a number of key players off of that team, Borne said the team was confident coming into this season.

“I think a lot of people have been surprised, but not us,” he said. “The freshmen have developed and the sophomores are bringing everything together. A lot of people did not think we were going to mesh together this well so early. But, we’ve still got a few stepping stones to take.”

The Bobcats have averaged over 27 points per game so far this season. But, Borne said there is room improvement for the unit, which is led by sophomore quarterback Early James and a veteran offensive line.

“It’s hard for a lot of teams to stop one part of our offense,” he said. “If they try to clog up the run, our quarterback is good enough to make plays and get the ball to our receivers, who are big playmakers on our team. We have a lot of freshmen out there that make a lot of plays for us. Our sophomores also play a big part in making plays, too.”

It’s been an interesting transition for Borne, who scored three touchdowns in a season-opening 38-7 victory over Itawamba. He is from Avondale, La., right in the heart of New Orleans and now he finds himself in the town of Ellisville, just about two hours from home. But, he says it’s been a pleasant situation.

“It has been a real good experience for me,” he said. “I have met a lot of new people. It is a real big difference coming from the city to a small town, but I like the peaceful environment. Everybody has been really good to me.

“It’s close enough so that my mom and dad can come to every game. My sister has been to a few games. And I have also had a few friends drive up here.”

Borne, a pre-business administration major, has attracted the interest of several senior colleges. He will graduate in December and hopes to have several options for the spring semester.

“I have been talking to Auburn, Alabama and Memphis,” he said. “I have received letters from them and Ole Miss, Marshall, LSU and some others.”

“I was recruited by a lot of schools coming out of Archbishop, but I did not have the GPA at first. I made my ACT score late, but I did eventually make it. I guess Southern Miss was the school that kind of led me this way. I talked to them a lot out of high school.”

But, first things first for Borne and his teammates.

East Central brings an 0-3 mark into Thursday’s game, but Borne said the Bobcats would not overlook them.

“We take every opponent seriously,” he said. “No matter what their record is or how they played the week before, we never slack off on any team we play. Our main focus is on us doing our job. We know if we do our job, we will be fine.”

And how far does Borne think the Bobcats can go if everything falls into place?

“Our main focus is for everybody to stay healthy, so that we can keep on pushing ahead,” he said. “Our first goal is take care of the South Division. Our next step would be the state championship and then, hopefully, going undefeated and getting to the national championship.”

This week's Preview

Getting a leg up

As if it's not enough that No. 2-ranked Gulf Coast CC (3-0) has an offense that has produced 11 TDs and a defense that leads the state in rushing D and interceptions, the Bulldogs also have Sean Brauchle, an All-America kicker. Brauchle is not just accurate (22-for-29 on field goals the last two years) but strong (a school-record 55-yarder last week and two 52-yarders in '07). "He's about as good as I've seen," said Gulf Coast coach Steve Campbell. "He's an excellent athlete." Brauchle was a soccer standout as well as an RB/DB at old Mercy Cross in Biloxi.
