Re: Borne off to fast start for Bobcats
Running back leads MACJC with 7 TDs
By Shawn Wansley, JCJC Sports Information Director
Last year, it took 10 games for Daniel Borne to score his first touchdown for the Jones County Junior College Bobcats.
That has not been the case in 2008.
“I am just doing my job,” said Borne, who has already amassed a MACJC-leading seven touchdowns in just three games this season. “I just follow the blocks the line opens up for me.”
Borne, a 5-foot-11, 206-pound sophomore from Archbishop Shaw High School in New Orleans, enjoyed a solid season for Jones last year. He rushed for 260 yards and his lone score was a 79-yard jaunt against Itawamba Community College in the MACJC semifinals, as the Bobcats rolled to a 58-31 victory.
Last week in a 21-9 win at Co-Lin, Borne had to shoulder most of the load because fellow running back Maurice Ducksworth injured a knee in the game’s first series and was unable to return. Borne ended up with 89 yards on 22 carries and scored on runs of 1 and 11 yards.
He said he just did what running back coach Chris Robinson asked him to do.
“Coach gives me the call and they put the ball in my hands,” he said. “I just go out and try to do my best.”
Borne, who has rushed for 218 yards on 52 carries (a 4.2 average), said having a year under his belt has been very beneficial for his success so far this season.
“I am more comfortable in the system this year with my teammates,” said Borne, who rushed for 119 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns in a 23-19 win over East Mississippi on Sept. 6. “Being from out of state, I really did not know anybody when I first got here. But, being around them last year and going through spring and summer practice, I think you can tell we are going to be successful because of the way we work.”
The 3-0 Bobcats, ranked No. 5 in the latest NJCAA/JCfootball.com poll, will host the East Central Community College Warriors in South Division play at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field.
Borne said the Bobcats have been trying to build on the success of last year’s 9-2 team that finished second in the state and was ranked No. 5 in the final poll. Despite losing a number of key players off of that team, Borne said the team was confident coming into this season.
“I think a lot of people have been surprised, but not us,” he said. “The freshmen have developed and the sophomores are bringing everything together. A lot of people did not think we were going to mesh together this well so early. But, we’ve still got a few stepping stones to take.”
The Bobcats have averaged over 27 points per game so far this season. But, Borne said there is room improvement for the unit, which is led by sophomore quarterback Early James and a veteran offensive line.
“It’s hard for a lot of teams to stop one part of our offense,” he said. “If they try to clog up the run, our quarterback is good enough to make plays and get the ball to our receivers, who are big playmakers on our team. We have a lot of freshmen out there that make a lot of plays for us. Our sophomores also play a big part in making plays, too.”
It’s been an interesting transition for Borne, who scored three touchdowns in a season-opening 38-7 victory over Itawamba. He is from Avondale, La., right in the heart of New Orleans and now he finds himself in the town of Ellisville, just about two hours from home. But, he says it’s been a pleasant situation.
“It has been a real good experience for me,” he said. “I have met a lot of new people. It is a real big difference coming from the city to a small town, but I like the peaceful environment. Everybody has been really good to me.
“It’s close enough so that my mom and dad can come to every game. My sister has been to a few games. And I have also had a few friends drive up here.”
Borne, a pre-business administration major, has attracted the interest of several senior colleges. He will graduate in December and hopes to have several options for the spring semester.
“I have been talking to Auburn, Alabama and Memphis,” he said. “I have received letters from them and Ole Miss, Marshall, LSU and some others.”
“I was recruited by a lot of schools coming out of Archbishop, but I did not have the GPA at first. I made my ACT score late, but I did eventually make it. I guess Southern Miss was the school that kind of led me this way. I talked to them a lot out of high school.”
But, first things first for Borne and his teammates.
East Central brings an 0-3 mark into Thursday’s game, but Borne said the Bobcats would not overlook them.
“We take every opponent seriously,” he said. “No matter what their record is or how they played the week before, we never slack off on any team we play. Our main focus is on us doing our job. We know if we do our job, we will be fine.”
And how far does Borne think the Bobcats can go if everything falls into place?
“Our main focus is for everybody to stay healthy, so that we can keep on pushing ahead,” he said. “Our first goal is take care of the South Division. Our next step would be the state championship and then, hopefully, going undefeated and getting to the national championship.”
