SAC beats Saddleback.... but another questionable call

SAC back in their own territory with about 2 minutes left in the game and down 7-6. Appears Saddleback is going to win the game. I think it was 4th down and LONG (Im going off recollection which is terrible) Montana completes a pass well short of a first. Great tackle. A flag is thrown immediately after tackle and I believe (correct me if Im wrong Someone) helmet to helmet was called. Mounties get first down and go on from there to get the winning touchdown.

Now, we have a friend that sits with us sometimes who officiates football himself and said that call was TERRIBLE. So we are going to take the win of course but not very happy with it. I believe the better team for the night did win but probably shouldn't have. OK I'm speaking for myself.

Just a very very ugly game with the weather and the mud. Too bad it couldn't have been a better day.

Key drive of the game:

Saddleback takes over at the Mt. SAC 47 with 10:14 remaining on the clock, up 7-6. Pass incomplete. Pass incomplete. Pass incomplete. Total time elapsed, 21 seconds. At some point you have to wonder how many times in a row Saddleback will do this to themselves before they figure it out. They did the very same thing on two back-to-back occasions against Mt. SAC and Palomar in 2011, and now again in 2012.

It is like I heard a great philosopher once say, if you continue to bang your head into a brick wall, eventually you have to say ouch!

Just get the win, and forget the style points. When you are sitting at home on the following weekend, style points don't mean shit!

Yes Yes, agreed. Saddleback totally blew the clock management. We noticed that. They were running it pretty good (for the conditions) with all the miss directions and all. The only thing I can think of is they plain panicked and wanted to desperately pad the lead knowing that SAC was not finished.....I dont know.

I mean 3 incl. passes that were essentially giving 3 timeouts to Sac rather than keep the clock running............... some youth football coaches could have done a better job of clock management............ what abt the call that MM has called disgraceful ??? Well so far Im not hearing a big stink about it but MM is talking about the same call I mentioned. I dont know, it looked like a clean tackle to me but then a lot do that get flagged and this was one of those. Like I mentioned our friend who is an official thought it was so bad that he didnt believe the guy was going to work again after this. again, I dont know. I dont recall the Saddleback bench getting that upset about it either. Have to see it again.

If you weren't there than you didn't see that it was a GOOD call because the Saddleback defender did not only lead with his head but it was the way he left his feet and LEAPED in the air like superman that made it an easy call.

Thats why we didn't see any complaints now or after the game from the Saddleback team about that call!! They didn't even make a sound at the game when it happened!!!...

The MTSAC reciever was our fullback and pretty good size player so the Saddleback defender took that into consideration and I tell you it was more like a blindside punt return block the way the Saddleback defender hit our guy!

I tell you it was because he left his feet and jumped in the air like superman that made it so noticable but like I said...

You better take us out early or we will find a way to WIN the game... But still good game on both sides considering the stupid rain LoL!!!

Everything I am hearing was that it was an absolute horrific call. Even worse, I am also hearing that the Mt. SAC players showed a total lack of respect following the game, talking trash after the game as if they had earned it.

At some point, one has to show a level of maturity and just be happy with a gift. I love the Mt. SAC football program from an x's and o's standpoint, but this has become a fairly common trait among its players over the years. Unfortunately, they haven't exactly earned the title of gracious winners over the past five seasons. There is more to life than winning and losing games. Very few of these guys are going to earn a living playing football and they need to be taught to be humble and gracious to be successful in any walk of life.

Coach Jordan and his players were totally dished at the ceremony acted with class and went out the next day and won the game......

An official letter has already been drawn up from the officials, and from what I understand already sent to Saddleback, saying they blew the call. If I can get my hands on a copy of it, I will share it with you.

The call wasn't helmet to helmet. The call was hitting a defenseless player. He wasn't a defenseless player. He caught the ball, turned his head and lowered his shoulders to make a football move.

Guys, it was a bad call. You can like your football program and root for your team all you want. That is great. I like it. The bottom line is, Saddleback had the game stolen from them on a bad call. It isn't the end of the world. The earth continues to rotate. You name it. But be a good fan/sport and call the play what it was. Otherwise, you look like a bad winner and ain't nothing worse than that.

Well, I just saw the video and the call appears to be justified to me. Great tackle, and I don't necessarily like the rule but that was definitely a good head down shot to the helmet just as SD described.

Like I said, the call wasn't for helmet to helmet. It was for a hit on a defenseless player (two very different things). If the officials have sent a letter, that is pretty unprecedented. If they are saying it was a bad call, it was a bad call. They have more to lose than anybody in these forums.

Look, I have seen the video 100 times. It was not in ANY WAY an illegal hit. Mt. SAC will make 40 tackles this weekend just like it, and none of them will be whistled for a 15-yard penalty. It was an absolutely horrific call. As bad as you will ever see in that situation. You can keep telling yourself it was illegal to make yourself feel better about the win, but there is a reason the officials have issued a letter of apology.

They're protecting players as much as they can now and this call is made ALL the time so I don't see why you can't understand this call?....

Maybe it was bad timing of it all because of course it was in such a crucial moment of the game?

I don't know but what Skube & I see is that you see the MTSAC player clearly gets his facemask get hit but like I said.... It's my opinion and unfortunately, the refs called it.

Well number 1 I don't need to tell myself anything. I was open to the "bad call" to begin with and would have excepted the loss if was never called. I saw much bigger reasons than that if we would have lost. Number 2, I never called it an illegal hit. I said I thought was a great tackle. I'm making my judgement according to their rules not mine. I see these flags all season long and wonder why there is a flag on the field. It is what it is and I'm not surprised that people see it differently. If the refs want to send apologies they need post date a lot of them for the whole season LOL.

You said that this was a gift for Mt. SAC. Many people think it was a gift for BC to get in the playoffs ( I'm not one of them) so maybe we are even. None the less I think the 2 best teams made it

Actually, it's not only my opinion, but it is also the opinion of the officials themselves, who wrote an apology letter.

Don't get me wrong, I am a big Mountie fan. Great program with great guys leading the program. I am a huge Bob Jastrab fan. I love their style of football. I have nothing but respect, which is why I still have them ranked No. 2 in the nation with a very good chance of winning another national title.

Also, lets not forget that I was the one that first came out and chastised Saddleback for passing the ball three times in a row with 10:15 left in the game. I call em how I see em.
