Thusday Mississippi recaps

From the Clarion Ledger:

East Mississippi 27, Gulf Coast 23
PERKINSTON - East Mississippi quarterback Randall Mackey directed a 77-yard scoring drive that culminated in his 3-yard touchdown run with 21 seconds left to give the Lions a stunning upset of the second-ranked Bulldogs.

East Mississippi improved to 3-1 in ending defending national co-champion Gulf Coast's 15-game winning streak over two seasons.

Mackey, who was 6-for-6 on the winning drive, had three touchdown passes, the last of which was a 29-yarder to Wayne Brown with 3:59 left.

The winning drive came after the Lions stopped the Dogs on fourth-and-5 on the Lions' 23 with 2:13 left.

A huge part of East Mississippi's victory was blocking two field goals and an extra point.

Jones 42, East Central 35
ELLISVILLE - Early James' 8-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Jackson with 5:53 left hoisted the fifth-ranked Bobcats (4-0, 2-0 South) on a night the Warriors (0-4, 0-2) gave them all they could handle.

James threw three TD passes as did East Central quarterback Emmanuel Taylor. Jones running back Daniel Borne scored on a 13-yard run in the second quarter, giving him eight TDs on the season.

Pearl River 37, Hinds 10
RAYMOND - Emil Jones tossed three TD passes to lead the seventh-ranked Wildcats over the Eagles for the seventh straight time.

Pearl River improved to 4-0 and 1-0 in the South, while Hinds dropped to 2-2, 1-1.

Northwest 33, Itawamba 10
SENATOBIA - Germichael Sanford had rushing TDs of 76, 1 and 1 yards to lead the Rangers (2-2, 1-0 North). The Indians fell to 1-3, 1-1.

Delta 35, Northeast 0
BOONEVILLE - Johnathan Taylor threw touchdown passes of 14, 45 and 5 yards to Cordario Calvin to fuel Delta's one-sided win. Taylor completed 20 of 29 passes for 227 yards as the Trojans moved to 3-1 and 1-1 North.

The Tigers fell to 0-4, 0-2.

Copiah-Lincoln 28, Southwest 0
SUMMIT - Quarterback Micah Davis completed touchdown passes of 78 yards to Jason Bruce and 17 yards to Haki Reed as the Wolves improved to 1-3 and 1-1 in the South. The Bears dropped to 0-3, 0-2.

Coahoma 28, Holmes 14
CLARKSDALE - The Tigers moved to 3-0 and 2-0 North.

Re: Thusday Mississippi recaps

I covered the Gulf Coast/East Miss Game last night. Probably the best JUCO thus far in the state this year. I also covered the East Miss vs. Jones JC game a few weeks ago. I was unsure if Jones was not quite as good as I thought or if East was a lot better than I thought. I guess they answered that for me last night.

One thing I didn't notice in many of the write-ups is that East Miss blocked two FG and an XPT in the game which was more than enough to change the outcome. If Gulf Coast makes those two FG and the extra point East has no chance to win the game.

Good snaps, good holds, the kicks were struck fine (no too low), East just did a great job on Special Teams.

Somewhere Bull Sullivan is smiling today.
