This kid compiled a 21-1 record as a starteing QB at Riverside CC the past 2 years and he beat Mt. Sac in the early part of this season when they had a 26 game winning streak going. He was coached by Tom Craft the renowned guru QB coach in Southern California......

My question is why hasn`t this QB received a D1 offer ??? What is the story on why no one offered him..... he is set to be a preferred walk on at Utah..... any news on Dalton Livingston ??? Brad any thought ???

Yes, it's mind boggling what happened to this kid. Hopefully next year he can start @ UTAH!

2 stars on Rivals means you are a "D1-A mid-major" prospect. Somehow, Brad thinks Livingston should be playing NAIA right now.

Go to YouTube and watch his highlights from high school and from JC. The difference? 2 stars in high school, none in college.
I don't hand out stars. they don't give me that kind of power.

I think Dalton could have had some opportunities to receive a scholarship at some mid-majors or D1AA programs had he been patient and waited a bit longer. He opted to walk on at Utah instead, in hopes of receiving a scholarship later from the Utes.

Not sure where you got the NAIA stuff from.

I had Dalton rated the No. 9 Pro Style quarterback in the country last season and the No. 5 Pro Style guy in California.

Part of his problem when it comes to recruiting is that he was somewhat of a tweener. At 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, he wasn't very big to be a pro style recruit. Most D1 schools start at 6-foot-2 or 6-foot-3 and go up from there. If he had great feet he could have been higher, but in two seasons at RCC he had -1 yards rushing.

JCGridiron Pro Style Rankings

That's a very good point. If Livingston had waited to walk on to Utah in the fall, he would have certainly gotten many D2 or NAIA scholorship offers.

This happens to many very good players that just don't have the D1 size, but can go on the be very successful at the D2 levels. Some of those guys that dominate there even make it to the NFL.

I always thought that he could had been a great replacement for Kellen Moore. They are very similar in size and Boise runs an offense similar to Craft's. I think Brad is right, a little patience would had got him an offer. I've seen schools even this late in the year adding QBs. I wish Dalton the best!!

One thing comes to my mind though; Since he's a walk on athlete, Can he go elsewhere if the right opportunity came along? Can another school still recruit him?

That's good to know, that he can still pursue other opportunities in the future. Good luck!

If he has other options, he needs to make the decision quickly given his clock. With Utah handing out a late offer to a running back a few days back, one has to wonder how serious they are about Dalton playing quarterback in the future.

Just curious though; How was that QB Katz from the beavers able to transfer directly to the Aztecs?

I have very little to do with Rivals rankings, so I really could not answer that question in detail. I do know, however, it has very little (to nothing) to do with win/loss records.

Rivals is primarily a high school recruiting network. They do not have the work force to rank every junior college prospect. They will usually start out by ranking a top-50 towards the beginning of the season. All of those players will get assessed stars. After that, they usually do not evaluate JUCO players until they have signed somewhere.

This is why I do my own rankings by position.

Wow he was rated as a 5.3 out of high school and only had 1 win. Did he have any offers out of HS? Really small school I am guessing. Texas Football is so good. Surprising he didn't stay home? Seems like there is a lot missing to the story?

Wins and losses really have very little to do with it. If he is on a winning team, he is likely going to get a lot more looks because his team has a lot more athletes for scouts to look at and more of a reason to go to the school and take a look at what they have on campus. Quarterbacks have certain skill-sets that scouts are looking for. Either they have them or they do not. Winning doesn't hurt, but it doesn't trump accuracy, mobility, arm strength, size, decision making, mechanics or system experience. There has been a lot of very mediocre quarterbacks on great teams over the years, and vice versa.

Just saying there is great football in Texas and really no need to waste all the money coming to California. Hind site is 20-20 but too bad the kid didn't get to play at a high level high school where he would have had a lot more competition and a better chance to be seen. There are so many transfer in calif. its not even funny.

SL 13. My question for you, is how do you have so much "inside info" on the kid? Now if dalton doesn't get to play at Salt Lake in 2013, will you change your name here??

I think it's 95% pretty simple on D1 recruiting....if a player has the D1 size, speed, skill and academics, then they will be recruited D1.....if not, then D2, NAIA or D3.

If Livingston was 6'3.....he would have multiple D1 offers to choose from. The fact is he is not.

I still say he is a very good QB. I think he could/would/should be a very good D2 QB.

Hopefully things will bounce his way and he'll get some PT at Utah or maybe a scholarship. If not, let's not forget he's already started 22 games of college football....which is more than a lot of other QB's can say.

With that he's already had a great college football career.

This is why I said recruiting is 95% simple. It's the 5% that you get the unusual stories (BTW Wyoming is D1)

Well from what I understand Drew Brees had a very good support system at home.

No, I'm not saying Livingston is Brees. I'm saying that eliminating a prospect because they are not 6-3 could end up being a mistake. Brees had one offer coming out of high school and that was from Wyoming. The coach who was recruiting him moved over to coach at Purdue and convinced the staff there to take him. Last week, he became a 33-year old, 6-0 NFL quarterback with a 5-year, $100MM contract, $60MM of which is guaranteed. If that one coach had not believed in him, I guess he'd have gone D2 and would be a businessman or who knows what now. Instead, he's a Super Bowl champ, NFL MVP and future Hall of Famer. Not bad for a guy who is too short to play D1, and a great example to kids everywhere who are doubted for their lack of prototypical size.

Kind of makes me wonder how the recruiting services had Brees ranked as a prospect.
Nobody disagrees with you on that point. Unfortunately, schools are somewhat boxed in when it comes to recruiting players. There is way too many players to look at, and not enough time to look at all of them. So what do they do? They start cutting corners and setting guidelines. We are going to look at quarterbacks between the sizes of 6-foot-2 and 6-foot-6, etc. It has changed a little in recent years with duel-threat guys taking a more prominent role due to the changes in offensive philosophy.

Another vital piece of the puzzle is recruitability. If I am not mistaken, Dalton was a 2-for-2 guy. D1 schools will very rarely move on a 2-for-2 guy, especially at quarterback. They want a guy to be there for as many years possible to get the system down.

Great point Brad.

Look at Mendocino QB Kevin Hatrick. He was from a very small private high school in Houston. He went to Mendocino and started in 2010, but was 2nd string in 2011, but still got a lot of playing time. He still ended up geting a scholarship to NAIA Ohio Dominican University. (as a side note the kid is 6'3)

I have no doubts that Dalton would have gotten a D2 or NAIA scholarship. But if he is happy at Utah......then that's all that matters!

Offhand, Kellen Moore (BSU) was 6-0. Colt McCoy (UT) was 6-1, as was Brooks Bollinger (WI) and is Aaron Murray (UGA). I'm sure there are plenty more 6-0 or 6-1 pro style QBs in D1, if I cared enough to research it. The simple fact is that size matters and if you're too small, you won't be getting a chance in most instances. Just like how this RefHeckler dude won't be making any porno movies.
